Understanding Justification
“Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:”
Romans 5:1
What is justification?
Justification is God’s act of kindness which He ably expressed in removing our guilt and penalty of sin while at the same time making us righteous through Christ’s atoning sacrifice. Justification is about God declaring us to be just or righteous, as if we never sinned. It is a legal term signifying acquittal. Through Jesus Christ we have been acquitted and discharged by God, the Judge of the whole earth! Do you know that if not for Jesus Christ, we can never be at peace with God? If not for Jesus, we all will stand before God damned and condemned to eternal hell fire? The truth is that no man born of a woman can be clean or pure enough to be justified before God. The Bible says “How then can man be justified with God? or how can he be clean that is born of a woman?”
Job 25:4
David also corroborated by saying,
“And enter not into judgment with thy servant: for in thy sight shall no man living be justified.” (Psalms 143:2)
It is important to note that Adam’s sin made us to stand before God condemned, but through Jesus Christ, the second Adam, every believer stands justified before God.
Our justification is established on the basis of the following:
1. The Work of Faith
“Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.”
Galatians 2:16
We are justified by faith, not by works.
It is our faith in Christ Jesus that justifies us, not according to our works of righteousness.
2. The Work of Grace
“That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.”
Titus 3:7
We are justified by His grace!
Grace is God choosing to justify us rather than curse us as our sin or iniquity deserves. Do you know what it means to be made an heir of God? It means that God has graciously given you an inheritance like Jesus. You are now a joint heir with Christ! Grace has given you the greatest treasure which you were not qualified for. If not for Jesus, you would not have enjoyed grace in the first place.
3. Blood of Jesus Christ
“Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.”
Romans 5:9
We are justified by His blood!
By the blood of Jesus, our sins are washed away! And we are made clean and pure—white as snow. From the very minute we receive Jesus as Lord and Saviour, immediately God justifies us, and decides to put our past sin into the sea of forgetfulness.
Justification is not a licence to live in sin perennially. No! As such, we must accept the personal responsibility to live holy and pure before God. Yes, we are justified by Christ but we can not continue in sin that grace may abound! Yes, we are justified by Christ but we can not afford to use our justification as a basis to be committing sin with reckless abandon. You and I must not be found meddling with sin, as Christ is not the minister of sin! The Bible says,
“But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin? God forbid.”
Galatians 2:17
I decree and declare that you will continually enjoy the full blessing of justification in Jesus mighty name!
