The Worth of Discipline
“For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.”
Hebrew 12:11 ESV
What is Discipline?
Discipline is the practice of training people or yourself to obey rules or a code of behaviour, using punishment to correct disobedience.
The value or worth of discipline is seen in the longer-term good or benefits. A wise man said, “Discipline is the process of subordinating today’s pleasure for a greater longer-term good. The undisciplined are slaves to moods, appetites and passions.” The person who does not sacrifice the present comfort for the future comfort can never amount to greatness.
Let’s consider 3 categories of discipline:
1. Self Discipline
“A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.”
Proverbs 25:28 ESV
Apostle Paul was an excellent self- disciplined fellow in the Bible.
Self-discipline was his greatest ‘secret’ to his ministry success. He knew how to discipline his body! “But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.”
1Corinthians 9:27 ESV
Can we train or discipline ourselves like Apostle Paul? Yes, we can! We can discipline our minds and bodies to align with the rules of God. We can also discipline ourselves to align with the rules of success. George Washington said, “Discipline is the soul of an army. It makes small numbers formidable; procures success to the weak, and esteem to all.”
2. Parental Discipline
“Discipline your son, for there is hope; do not set your heart on putting him to death.”
Proverbs 19:18 ESV
Parents are saddled with the onerous task of parenting their children. And one tool in their hands to do this, is discipline. The Bible says, “Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.”
Ephesians 6:4 ESV
Parents are meant to train up their children in the way they should go in life. Are you a parent? Please don’t fail to use the rod of discipline to drive foolishness far from your children! Don’t forget, discipline is about setting up rules and ensuring compliance.
3. Divine Discipline
“Know then in your heart that, as a man disciplines his son, the Lord your God disciplines you.”
Deuteronomy 8:5 ESV
God is a strict Disciplinarian whose Word is law! He has been in the business of using discipline to teach and lead us away from sin and move us toward righteousness. Every divine discipline is designed to cause us to embrace genuine repentance. David, a man after God’s heart was greatly disciplined by God. David’s life serves as a reminder that God will not allow His children to get away with sin. Wisdom demands that we must decide to live according to God’s laws for own good!
I decree and declare that you will embrace a lifestyle of discipline always in Jesus mighty name.
Yours sincerely,
