“Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.”
1 Corinthians 9:24
Life is a race! Whether you know it or not, that is immaterial and inconsequential. The fact is that you are running a race! A race is set before you and you are meant to run with a view to obtaining a prize.
“… and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,”
Hebrews 12:1
You are unique with a unique race set before you. Your brother’s or friend’s race is different from yours. As such, you can’t compete with them! What they do with their race should not bother you. Just run your race, and let them run theirs. Don’t be afraid to run at your own pace. A runner who looks at his colleague’s performance will never run well, not to talk of winning the race! Mind your own race! Mind your business!
3 factors that enhance your running your race well:
1. Talents
“And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey.”
Matthew 25:15
For you to run well, you must be endowed with the requisite talents. And God is the Giver of talents! He has graciously given each of us talents that would prepare us for our own unique races. It is our unique gift or ability that defines our fitness for our race. No human being is talentless or gift-less!
The servant in this passage with one talent denigrated his talent by burying it. He refused to run his race. We must run our own race and quit trying to run someone else’s! We must focus on being who God made us to be. Whether your talent is one, two or five, place value on it and do your own thing. You cannot afford to run into another person’s lane. You cannot afford to break ranks. If you do, you will be disqualified. The Bible says, “They shall run like mighty men; they shall climb the wall like men of war; and they shall march every one on his ways, and they shall not break their ranks:”
Joel 2:7
2. Endurance
“Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
Hebrews 12:2
Jesus Christ gives us a vivid picture of endurance. He endured the cross, despising the shame associated with being hung on the cross. Don’t forget it was only criminals that were subjected to such punishment those days. He endured because of the joy of glory awaiting Him in heaven.
The race of life is not a 100 meter dash, but a marathon which is an endurance race. Whatever race, calling, ministry or business that is set before you, will require endurance in order to command results. When God appoints you to do something He equips you with the necessary grace or resources to do it. But endurance is required for accomplishment.
3. Prize
“I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 3:14
Do you know why many sport stars endure the pain of training? Prize!
Do you know why successful business people labour over night? Prize! Do you know what is at stake during major tournament? Prize!
Our ultimate motivation for running the race that is set before us is the prize that awaits us. The Worth or quality of prize attached your race determines how committed you will be to your race. Heavenly race is superior to any earthly race, hence wisdom demands that you resolve to run heavenly race with a sense of decorum, seriousness and responsibility.
I decree and declare that you will run successfully the race that is set before you in Jesus mighty name.
Yours sincerely,
